About 18.1 percent of the adult US population, or about 43.6 million adults, are diagnosed with a mental illness in any given year (ââ¬Å"Any Mental Illnessâ⬠n.d.). The insights and expertise that social workers in the mental health field can provide are needed now more than ever. The following four agencies specialize in mental health treatment and rehabilitation. The Adult Mental Health Division (AMHD) of the State of Hawaii Department of Mental Health serves adults who require counseling services, those who have been diagnosed with a serious mental illness, adults who have been court ordered to treatment, victims of a natural disaster or terrorism, and those who are in crisis (ââ¬Å"Access to Servicesâ⬠n.d.). They also offer a 24-hour crisis hotline for those that live in the state of Hawaii. Their mission is to ââ¬Å"provide a comprehensive, integrated mental health system supporting the recovery of adults with severe mental illnessâ⬠(ââ¬Å"Mission, Vision, Core Valuesâ⬠n.d.). The services offered are provided through state owned and operated facilities such as community mental health centers and the Hawaii State Hospital. They also provide services through contracted private providers. AMHD also offers a diverse range of services including mental health education, rehabilitation in mental health centers, in-patient hospital services, court referrals, child and adolescent family-focused treatment, and developmental disability assistance (ââ¬Å"About Department of Healthâ⬠n.d.).
